Empowering Black Women to embrace rest, reclaim their freedom, and honor their humanity.

What is the Burn the Cape Initiative?

The Burn the Cape initiative is a support group for Black women, created to provide a space for letting go of the pressure to always be strong, to always have it together, and to always carry more than their fair share.

The name Burn the Cape was chosen because it speaks to something so many Black women know too well—the burden of the “Strong Black Woman” stereotype, which expects them to be superhuman, constantly sacrificing their own well-being to hold everything and everyone else up.

The cape is symbolic of that heavy, invisible armor Black women often wear to survive in a world that demands strength but rarely offers support. “Burn the cape” means giving Black women permission to take that armor off. It’s about saying, you don’t have to be Superwoman here. You can be human. You can be soft. You can be vulnerable. You can prioritize yourself and lean on others for a change.

Led by licensed Black therapists, this 10-week group provides a safe, supportive space to dive into real issues like exhaustion from constantly fighting against racism, feeling pressured to meet impossible standards, and struggling with burnout.

Each week, the group will tackle a different topic, focusing on ways to reject harmful stereotypes, take care of themselves, and find strength in softness and community. This is more than a support group; it’s a lifeline for those who need a place to breathe, to feel seen, and to remind themselves that they are enough—cape or no cape.

Weekly Focus Areas

The Burn the Cape program offers a week-by-week approach to support Black women in reclaiming their well-being and redefining strength on their own terms.

Week 1: Celebrating Self

We kick off by focusing on self-celebration. This week is all about reconnecting with the parts of yourself that make you unique, valuable, and resilient. Through guided exercises, you’ll recognize the strengths you already carry, learning to celebrate your identity beyond the roles and responsibilities you hold.
